Catherine Martin
Sculptor
Catherine Martin is a sculptor
Her sculptures playfully combine the contemporary, medieval, and ancient, in a naïve style drawn from her work as a conservation stonemason on historic buildings, medieval wall paintings, children’s book illustration, and storytelling.
Catherine endeavours to communicate what it is to be human, within a world where ancient and contemporary coexist. She is currently working on a body of sculpture with the belief that quality of material plays an important role in the energy of a piece. Within this body of work two dimensional painting and pattern plays within and across the vibrant three dimensional tangible forms.
Catherine did her Foundation in Art and Design at Falmouth School of Art, and her BA in Fine Art Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art. She continued to hone and refine her skills at the Building Crafts College in London and subsequently at York Minster where she worked for years on the monumental medieval East Window as a conservation stonemason.
Catherine’s own pieces continue to reflect her ongoing work with renowned heritage structures across the country, providing rich inspiration to feed her highly perceptive contemporary sculptures.
