Catherine Martin presents large-scale figurative paintings, works rich in human presence and emotional depth.
Guided by empathy and an instinctive, narrative-led practice, her paintings invite viewers into intimate explorations of memory and connection.
What it is to be a mother, a sister, a lover, an ancestor, all play out in these paintings as they capture the closeness of family. The paintings, devoid of material reference, hover in a timeless place. Mortals become ancestors, passing down stories and presence throughout the generations. Daydreaming, staring, kissing, whispering; the figures hold their own space within the colourful depths of the worlds they exist in.
Catherine graduated from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, with a BA (hons) in Fine Art in 2005, prior to which she did her Foundation Degree in Art and Design at Falmouth School of Art.
